Innsbruck’s Fabulous Old Town Christmas Markets
Cradled in an alpine valley is one of Europe's picturesque old towns. As night falls during the holiday season, it transforms into a magical scene illuminated by festive lights. We visit Innsbruck in Austria.
Austria shares its boarder with numerous countries. Its western pan-handle swings through the Alps in a region called Tyrol, and Innsbruck is its capital. We visit at the end of November, and catch two Christmas Markets: the first centered in and around Old Town, and the second market next to the river.
Innsbruck resides in a mountain valley along the river Inns. The surrounding snow-capped peaks are a skiing mecca with 9 resorts, and has hosted Winter Olympics in 1964 and 76. Centuries earlier, it was home to Habsburg Emperor Maximilian I in the 1490’s. Innsbruck’s rich history can be found in its wonderful old town, where architecture spanning several centuries line its narrow streets. By day, the Old Town is a joy to explore, but as the sun sets, a magical transformation occurs. The colorful buildings are bathed in a soft, radiant glow, and the Christmas markets twinkle with festive lights, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The ambiance is fabulous, with couples, families and friends having a wonderful time. This evening experience stands out as my most cherished memory from Innsbruck.
