West Twin Glacier - Juneau Icefield, Alaska

The Juneau Icefield is the 5th largest icefield in North America, straddling the Canadian boarder, covering 1,500 square miles with 38 large glaciers. It stretches from Skagway all the way down to the Taku River by Juneau.

Wings Airways has a set of five DeHavilland Otter floatplanes with new 900 horsepower engines. We treated ourselves to their 5 Glacier Exploration Tour, an exciting 40-minute flight over the vast Juneau Icefield. We loved it. It was a beautiful day, and I was pleased the glass windows allowed for good video.

Departing Juneau, we fly up along the Mendenhall Glacier, continue past Herbert Glacier, across Icefield peaks and plateaus with Devil’s Paw in the distance, reaching the east side past Sockeye Falls, looping around West Twin Glacier, Hole-In-The-Wall Glacier, and Taku Glacier, before proceeding down the expansive Taku River valley back to Juneau.
