Ravinj Old Town

Ravinj lies on the west coast of Istria County, Croatia, has a old town with narrow cobblestone streets, tall stone houses, and a wonderful harbor.

It was founded sometime between the 3rd to 5th centuries AD, on an island with a narrow channel separating it from the mainland.  In 1763 the channel was filled in to provide seamless passage to the mainland, turning the island into a peninsula. Over the centuries, Rovinj was part of numerous empires, but the strongest influence on its architecture comes from its five centuries as part of the Republic of Venice.

Today Rovinj is very much a blend of Italian and Croatian culture, and is officially bilingual in both languages. Its core old town is a delight to explore featuring narrow, twisty cobblestone streets. It is a charming lived-in village with a wonderful harbor and great to explore. It was also our home base while exploring a few other locations in Istria.
